A WW2 Sherman tank lies half buried in the sand on Red Beach Two on Betio's northern shore. Betio was the site of one of the bloodiest Pacific battles of the second World War when 18,000 US marines stormed Betio's beaches to recapture Tarawa from the Japanese. In a battle lasting 76 hours, 4,690 Japanese and 1,115 Americans were killed.
