STATUS Widespread and abundant resident. Highly nomadic in response to water fluctuations. Usually in pairs or loose flocks.
HABITAT Freshwaters and margins of slow-flowing rivers with low emergent vegetation. Favours water surfaces covered by water lilies.
FOOD Mostly aquatic insects and their larvae; also spiders, small fish, crustaceans, mollusks and some plant matter.
