 May 15th 2008 - I start my adventure at 12:30pm. |
All packed up and ready to go. |
I didn't know what a difference all the luggage makes, |
it feels heavy and hard to move, but I will probably get used to it. |
First gas stop somewhere still in Illinois. |
 Another one in Iowa. |
And again somewhere in Nebraska. I spend the first night in York, Nebraska - approximately 580 Miles done! |
Meanwhile in Los Angeles, Claus is all packed up |
and starts his ride on Friday, May 16th, late morning. |
Exit 1 on I70 - Fort Cove, Utah, that same day, or better said night, Claus and I finally meet. |
 I finish my Iron Butt / Bun Burner - halleluja ! |
 Friday May 16th - 10:15pm Mountain time - Odometer reading 27'001. |
That means I did 1'548 miles in under 36 hours. |
We head up another couple of miles north on I15 to Fillmore, Utah where we spend the night in a neat little motel. |
Breakfast Saturday morning, May 17th. |
They have two little trains running from the lobby through the kitchen to the breakfast room, |
and what you think at first is really funny, turns out to be really annoying after the 5th turn with noisy tooting. |
 Route planning after breakfast, |
where in Utah should we be going? |
Putting all the stuff back on the bike, |
and ready to go! Our first day riding together. |
Don't they say that Harleys lose something all the time, |
it seems like Honda wants to join that club now, because Claus lost the end cap on his throttle. |
We take I15 north to Nephi, Utah, then US28 south to Gunnison, Utah. People at gas stations always seem compelled to talk |
to motorcycle riders, and here we got a lecture about why we do not want to be Mormons. |
Funny people in the state of Utah, I can tell you. |
We take US89 north to Fairview. On the way in Manti we see the first Mormon Church, |
and supposedly one of the most famous Mormon Temples in the Country. |
From Fairview we take US31 east towards Huntington, Utah. |
A few miles along US31 we come to Skyline Mountain. |
Not very high in altitude yet, but still a fun climb. |
And even though it's already past mid May, there is still lots of snow and it's getting cooler. |
 US31 - Skyline Mountain |
View from the top of the pass |
Hey, what is Claus doing there? |
 Done! |
And taking pictures again as if nothing ever happened. |
Somewhere on that road I see that Claus is "producing" blue-grey |
smoke clouds from his exhaust - no honestly, it's not an HD in disguise. |
We stop for gas and Claus figures out he lost the O-ring of his oil stick. |
It's Saturday and all shops are closed, but a lady actually opens her farm supply store and lets us buy a couple. |
From Huntington we take US10 north to Price and from there US6 to Helper, Utah. |
Helper actually has a huge Honda Dealership and we have the baby checked, it's all good just a little too much oil. |
We also buy some glue for the rubber piece of the handlebar since the endcap is not in stock. |
We take US191 north through the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, fun little road! |
We arrive in Duchesne, Utah where we spend the night in the only motel in town. |
Before we go to dinner that night we fix Clauses handlebar with the glue we bought. |
There you go, nothing is slipping anymore. Hopefully that was all the repair work for the trip, but you never know. |
The next morning, Sunday, May 18th. |
The plan for today is to go via Salt Lake City to Tooele where "Stansbury Park" race track (Miller Racing) is located. |
We take US40 west through another part of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. |
We stop on our way at the Starvation State Park, |
it's steadily going up and we start freezing and we each have to put on an additional sweater. |

 US40 Utah - what a fun ride! |
We take US40 further west to Heber City. |
In Park City US40 meets I80 which we plan on taking up to Salt Lake City. |
Quick breakfast stop on the outskirts of Park City. |
We hit I80 again but all of a sudden hundreds of motorcycles come the other way, cruisers, sports bikes, everything. |
It seems like a never ending convoy, so we turn around at the next exit and follow them. |
The convoy stops at a Wal Mart parking lot somewhere in the vicinity of Park City |
and we find out that this is a charity event for Shriner's Childrens Hospital. |
We stay for a little while but decide to not join the ride |
and continue to Tooele and see if we can make it in time for |
the American Le Mans Series race this afternoon. |
On our way out a group of riders stop us and chat with us, and it turns out that one of them has |
tickets for the races in Tooele for this afternoon, his nephew is racing and he doesn't have time to go, so he gives them to us. |
We almost make it in time but miss the start. |
Nevertheless, we jump right in and watching and listening is very exciting. |

Back to the last race of the day. |
Stansbury Park, Miller Motorsports Park, Utah |
At night when we come back to our hotel |
the parking lot is also stocked with exciting cars. |
The next day, Monday, May 19th, we take I80 back towards Salt Lake City. |
We stop at a parking lot and get a good look at the Great Salt Lake. |
The Great Salt Lake is the largest US Lake west of the Mississippi |
and 4 times saltier than the ocean. It's also called America's Dead See. |
There are about 4.5 billion tons of salt in the lake and the salt industrie |
extracts about 2.5 million tons of salt each year. |
A couple of miles closer to Salt Lake City we stop at the Saltair. |
The first Saltair was finished in 1893 as a beach resort, |
burnt down twice in 1920 and 1931, |
and is today a famous concert venue, |
and apparently an interesting spot for the artist community. |
Claus and I are brave enough to buy the local specialty "Salt Water Taffies" |
and even though they have a slightly salty aftertaste, they are really yummie. |
We take I80 via Salt Lake City back to Park City and exit at Wanship, Utah for gas. |
And as unbelievable as it sounds, Claus drops my little tube of lip balm into his freshly filled tank. |
He is really pissed (excuse my language) and worried that the gasoline will dissolve the lip balm and create a real bad mess. |
So we put the Bird on the center stand and shake and hope that the tube will miraculously float up. |
And after a lot of shaking and wiggling it finally does, thank goodness! |
After the disaster is avoided we decide to take US32 to Kamas, Utah |
and from there US150 north to Wyoming looks like a good choice for today. |
On US 32 we pass Rockport Lake in Rockport State Park. |
Rockport Lake, Rockport State Park |
 Wanship Dam, Rockport Lake |
We take US150 and after about 10 Miles there is a sign that the road is closed after 35 Miles due to wintery conditions, |
but since a couple of SUVs are moving on we decide to give it a try as well. |
Unfortunately after almost 40 miles the road is covered in snow and we need to turn around and go all the way back to Wanship. |
We take I80 and exit in Fort Bridger, Wyoming, where we visit the remains of the old fort. |
Established in 1843 Fort Bridger was one of the most important stops on the Oregon Trail. |

We stay the night in Vernal, Utah and the next morning, Tuesday May 20th, we take US 40 to Dinosaur, Colorado. |
At the Dinosaur Colorado Welcome Center we stock up on maps and material about Colorado and plan our route for the day. |
