The Last Day of Pompeii, the masterpiece of Karl Brullov. It is a huge and wonderful painting.
It is not hard to see that one and the same woman plays several roles in this painting. She is the death woman lying on the ground, the wife under the cape of her husband, the mother protecting her children, the bewildered woman with the blue scarf. I am not certain, but I believe that the model for all these is Countess Samoilova.
Brullov himself is also in the painting, next to the woman with the blue scarfe, carrying a box of painters gear on his head.
The painting is huge, wall filling and you can look at it for a long time to notice all the details, relations and messages.
