This painting is supposed to be about wasting time. I wonder if it is not just a couple after a meal or relaxing for a moment. The man is certainly enjoying himself, but what about the woman?
Is she sick or sleepy? She is warming her feet on the stove, so she could be feeling cold. On the other hand my grandma used to fall asleep like that after dinner, just like her mother before her would.
But what is interesting is the broken pipe on the ground. Did she smoke for the first time? Did she become sick because of it? Is that why the man is laughing?
