The South Coyote Butte area has a very delicate ecosystem requiring a special access permit issued by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It has unique geologic formations created some 50-80 million years ago.

Twenty permits per day are allowed - 10 through prior reservations and 10 drawn by lottery each day. Lottery permits are good for the FOLLOWING day.
