Rhododendron austrinum is found in the wild along the Gulf Coast, in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana, usually in woods, stream banks and swamps from 0' to 350', in USDA zone 6b to 10a. It was named in 1865, is fragrant, and blooms yellow to orange before the leaves expand, in April. The plant habit is open and upright to 15'.
