Kauai is a volcanic island over 5 million years old. On it's western side is Waimea Canyon, some
10 miles long, a mile wide and 3600 feet deep. It primarily resulted from a partial collapse of the
volcano, ancient lava flows and abundant rainwater, leading to massive erosion by the Waimea River.
