In this photo the hourglass shape in red is clearly visible on the upper chest of the large female. It is always there but small beads of skin around it swell up and become more prominent during estrus. The prevailing theory is that since they spend so much of the day sitting on their rumps feeding on grass, to have a sexual swelling in that area would not be an effective advertisement to males of sexual receptivity.
