We had stopped at a stream to rest and about 80 feet above me was this girl. I waved to her. She smiled and waved back. I motioned for her to come down but she only moved about six feet and then wouldn't budge. So after some more waving and smiling I relented and walked up to her. Two other boys had joined her. I was disappointed that the moment after I said hi she asked me for a birr. A birr is only about ten cents but we made it a habit of not paying so as not to encourage that behavior amongst children. Right after that she asked me for a sandwich which made me believe that she indeed was feeling needy. So I pulled some small packets of peanuts out of my pocket and her hands leapt out like a viper. Her eyes grew intense as well. After that I did give her and the older boy one birr each. It was a confusing moment. While they didn't look to be starving my guide later said that there, in the mountains, it was possible that they had only one meal per day.
