Three Rivers Petroglyph Recreation Site

16. Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, New Mexico

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site was one of the highlights of the trip. I became aware of this place from a New Mexico tourist magazine that had a wonderful article including photos of the variety of petroglyphs at the site and the pristine nature of the area.

The weather was a little warm at the base of the ridge but there was a nice breeze along the ridge top. The poor experience at Petroglyph NM was quickly forgotten. The trailhead and picnic area are located near the base of a ridge. The self-service entry to the ridge cost $2.00. There is a trail pamphlet and shows the trail and points out the location of some petroglyphs. As soon as I reached the rocky section of the ridge I immediately saw many petroglyphs pecked into the rocks. A survey of the area recorded 14,500 petroglyphs and there are places where the rocks are covered with markings. The ridge was covered with green vegetation and blooming yellow flowers.
