Chicago South from Hancock 95th Floor.jpg

Shot with the Nikon D70 and the Nikkor 28-200 G lens, hand-held, shortly after sunset, which accounts for the coloring in the sky to the right (southwest). Because this was a hand-held shot through a heavy plate glass window, and I needed the fastest shutter speed I could muster, I set the ISO at 1600 and then set exposure compensation at -2.0 EV in order to simulate ISO 6400. In post processing, starting in Nikon Capture, I brought the EV back up +2.0, and warmed up the white balance slightly. As expected, (1) the exposure was now correct, but, also as expected, (2) the detail in the foreground was slightly soft from hand movement, and (3) the noise levels were quite high and particularly noticeable in the sky, which was heavily speckled. In Paint Shop Pro 9, I used sharpening to help the foreground, and, on the sky, applied both strong salt-and-pepper noise reduction as well as a reduction in brightness and contrast. It all would have been much easier with a tripod at ISO 200 -- but it was fun, anyway.
