Filling in the Gaps

The previous Gallery, "Rising From the Ground" took us to the stage where the house frame is erected including the roof structure and rafters. The next stage is to fill the gaps between the structural members with the various layers of cladding, and to install services and joinery. We got to the "Highest Point". The next big milestone is "Lock-Up".

The order of doing things is dictated largely by access considerations. It is expensive to erect scaffolding, so we do not want to move it more than necessary. Kevin Mathisen's scaffolding had been utilised inside the building to erect the roof. It was then shifted to the UpHill side where it will stay until the windows and all weather boards are installed. Whereas the order of activity on the walls is Frame - Outside cladding - Services - Lining, on the roof, with its cathedral ceiling, we go from the inside out. The ceiling lining goes on the rafters. Then battens, then services (wiring for lights) then thermal insulation and then the roofing iron. All these steps will take place on the UpHill side before the scaffolding is moved to the DownHill side.
