King Kamehameha Day Parade

King Kamehameha Day Parade

To honor the memory of King Kamehameha The Great (the first king of United Hawaii Kingdom), the Celebration Commissions hosted the 89th annual lei-draping and floral parade. The parade got started promptly at 9:30 am on Saturday, June 11th, 2005.  This years parade featured decorated floats, Pa'u riders (costumed horse riders) and marching bands

The highlight of the Kamehameha Parade are the  Pa'u Riders in full cultural regalia. The women riders are dressed in some of the finest and most elegant garments as they ride along on horsebacks in the parade. The horses themselves are draped with overflowing flower leis. While the men act as escorts for the the royal court of the queen and the princesses of the different islands. Each island is represented by a different color. Red is for the Big Island of Hawaii, orange is for the Island of Lana'i and yellow is for Oahu.

Of course what would a parade be without its marching bands. This years parade featured the Kamehameha School Band, the Royal Hawaiian Band and other bands from visiting states: including Farmington, MO, Ft Wayne, IN, San Joaquin, and Santa Cruz, CA. So we hope you enjoy the photos of the 89th King Kamehameha Parade.
