From the reverse angle, here you can see how the notch looks, when carved into the other stock rail.

I found that each turnout is a little different, but in my case, it's only the diverging route that really needs the notch, but this certainly doesn't hurt to do the other side as well if you have the time of if you're having point-picking on that side.
