KP-8020-Obs-Design-091205a-SideViewClosedSm2.jpg

Evolution of the Balcony Remote Observatory.

Side view (roof closed), through the observatory toward the south.

Telescope enclosure is under the roof section, approximately 9' wide in this view. Structure to
the right is additional rail with roller brackets, to support the cantilever when open (roof rolls
over the edge of the balcony railing). Scope is shown in southern park position, a bit more
convenient than full east park position. Headroom is needed if Polar Park Position is used - might
raise scope if this park position is not needed.

Cathedral rolling ceiling provides close to horizon access to the south (straight into picture),
east (left; wall section flips down), and north (behind the reader). Western view is same as a
flat rolling roof - obstructed at ~35 degrees over horizon, if scope is 5.0' from the roof edge.

Motor as shown is a belt drive garage door opener. Anchor points would be at each roof edge, with
belt drawn down through the two pulleys for pull-pull, into the powered cog.
