The Karen hill tribe are actually refugees from Myanmar. The women are known for their long necks. It is said that in the old days, tigers pounced on women by the throat. The practice of putting brass rings around the neck was to protect the women. Nowadays, however, this practice continues partly for fashion and partly because tourists find these women fascinating.
