We (my spouse and I) accepted an invitation from her cousin and spouse, both retired, accomplished opera singers to visit them in Germany. We gladly accepted. Ironically, a few months after we finalized our travel plans, she became seriously ill and could only devote the last couple days of our two week visit. Nevertheless, we proceeded with our travel itinerary, booking hotel reservations through our local travel agent. More importantly, a ten-day pass on the German rail system enabled us to visit Berlin, Potsdam, Oranienburg (location of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp), Hamburg, Dresden, Munich and Salzburg, Austria quickly (much more efficient and less hassle than renting a car). Despite not knowing the language, we had little difficulty getting around. At times, many Germans speaking English helped us get to our destination points. We were extremely grateful for their kindness and consideration.
