Marakkanam Saltpans located at a distance of 114 km from Chennai on the ECR Road enroute to Puducherry.

Marakkanam Saltpan is a salt-producing region located in the Viluppuram district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the oldest and largest salt pans in India, with a history dating back to the 19th century. The salt pans are spread over an area of around 6,000 acres and are situated close to the Bay of Bengal. The salt pans are operated by the Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation, a government-owned company.

The salt production process in Marakkanam Saltpan involves the evaporation of seawater in large shallow basins called kallor, which are made of clay. Once the seawater is evaporated, salt crystals are left behind, which are then collected, washed, and dried. The entire process takes around two weeks to complete. It is an important source of livelihood for the local community, with many people employed in salt production and related activities. The salt produced here is sold across the country and is used in a variety of industries, including food processing, chemical manufacturing, and textiles.
