Early one sunday morning, I picked them from the Farmers' Market.
Our introduction was awkward: I sniffed, poked around, and paid the dollar.
The Basil, as they called themselves, were very shy.
You're thirsty, I'll leave you some water, I said testily.
And then, bid them a fond farewell, I jetted off to windyland.

I felt sorry for the Basil.
Or the Basil felt sorry for me.

There began our relation.

I sat with them whenever I was in town.
Early morning. In the middle of the night.
Those were my happy moments. My peace.
To them, I'm as lasting as the morning dew.
To me, they are my world.

You're hungry, I remarked. I'll bring you to soil, and to the windows.
Pinch me, they begged, make me bushier, you will like it,
See how I grow, see how I thrive, see how I...
But I would not be here to admire..., interrupted I.
Ah, they nodded, and looked away.
We returned to silence.

I said I needed to be gone again.
They promised they would tried hard to survive without me.
They tried, for the whole summer.

And then one day, flowers set in.
They are ready to move on.
No! not so soon, I pleaded. We have hardly begun.
I'm back. Promise. I'm yours to keep.
Show me the summer again.
Show me, how you were waiting for me by the windows.
Show me the summer I should have had... with you.
