Room III - viewed as a private room - mosaic discovered in 1880 dedicated to Bacchus the god of wine and good things, also shown are gladiators one with his net advancing with trident and dagger towards his armoured opponent whose helmet is just visible - the cock headed figure depicted in the mosaic is dressed as a Lanista (trainer of gladiators, or venator (hunter of animals in the arena). One such called Gallus (Latin for cockerel) is caricatured here. The crowd have thrown yellow millet like stalks onto the Griffin-like beasts.
