This image was taken whilst steaming up a Norwegian Fjord during exercise Silver Tower (1968). The torpedo was courtesy of Her Majesty's submarine HMS Otter ... one of four that were accidently fired at the "RFA Tidepool", the ship I was on at that time. There are not many which can claim to have taken such a photo and lived to tell the tale?
Note 1: RFA Tidepool (A76) - a fast fleet tanker of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Tidepool had a long and busy life in the fleet. The ship participated in both the Cod War and the Beria Patrol during the 1970s. In 1982 when the Falklands War broke out Tidepool was actually on its way to Chile to be disposed of. The ship was temporarily reclaimed by the United Kingdom and passed into Chilean hands in August 1982. Reference - http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/RFA%20Tidepool%20(A76)
Note 2: HMS Otter - Oberon Class submarine of the Royal Navy, launched 1960 at Chatham and sold 1992. Displacement: 1610 tons normal to 2030 tons/ 2410 tons submerged. Speed: 12 knots submerged and 17 knots on the surface. Crew: 64. Armament: eight 21 inch torpedo tubes (carrying 30 torpedoes). Reference - http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/oberon_class.htm
Note 3: Exercise “Silver Tower” was a NATO convoy exercise, the first of its kind since WWII.
