I was seriously concerned that folks in these parts don't understand ice cream
how else can one explain their inordinate affection for Blue Bell, a plebian ice cream made in Brenham (from happy cows, so they say)
I can't attest to the contentment of Hanks' cows, but this man knows ice cream
he claims he learned the art from his Mom
this is not heavy-rich ice cream like Bassetts in Philly (arguably the finest on earth) or Hagen Daz
while I love rich ice cream, he has a delicate touch and wonderful sense of flavor and texture
the ginger, black walnut, sweet cream, grape nut and pumpkin pie are all first rate, though sadly not always available
the omnipresent butter pecan is exemplary, gaining from the care Hanks exercises in roasting his pecans
going into the shop when the nuts are roasting is a special treat
