I'll risk potentially exposing a bit of private information out there in the interest of sullying these guys a bit.
My car loan went to Wells Fargo right after I bought it. No big deal, I signed agreeing to that. Anyways, after a month or so I got a written notice from them that they needed written proof of my insurance coverage, which is quite reasonable and no big deal, except at the bottom it kind of had a threatening bit, and this was the first letter I had received. It said that if I did not get coverage they would buy insurance for me, that it would cost $1,000 a year, that the insurance probably wouldn't meet legal minimums, and that the insurance company was an affiliate of theirs and that the insurance affiliate would receive a commission. Zoinks! I would have ceased doing business with them on the spot, except they had a website which made it fairly easy for me to report my insurance coverage to them online.
So the other day I get another similar letter from them, telling me that my insurance coverage on my vehicle had been cancelled, and the letter had the same insurance threat at the bottom. Checked with USAA and of course my insurance is just fine. I figure something with changing my address for both mailing and insurance purposes triggered their computer system to incorrectly conclude that my insurance had been cancelled, but I strongly dislike their tone, so I figured I'd just transfer the loan elsewhere. USAA makes it very easy to do so online. So I called WF to get the payoff amount for the loan, and then asked to be transferred to their insurance assurance (?) department, just to give them some feedback on why I was ditching their company. I was really nice and matter-of-fact with the lady, but she got rude with me! I just told her that I was taking my business elsewhere because of the wording of the letter, and they should reconsider the tone. She told me that the wording came from their legal department and it had to be that way, so I told her that I was taking my loan to some other bank with some other legal department that chooses different words. She replied that the letter had to include that part about shoving some expensive, unwanted (my words) insurance down your throat because the next letter would just be informing me that they had already done so. I replied that they could choose to send out one friendly letter first before following it with a threatening letter. She just started asking me if I still had insurance with USAA, if my account number was still 12345, etc., very rudely telling me that she would just take care of updating the data for me. I told her it didn't matter that she got the proof of insurance, because I will have already taken my business elsewhere before the due date for them having my proof of insurance. She kept pressing me for insurance info, and I just hung up on her.
I'll probably still send them the proof of insurance using their online system just so that they don't have a leg to stand on billing me for any insurance, but I had the necessary documents to transfer the loan to USAA printed, signed, notarized, and mailed off about 3 hours after this phone call.
