Unit 04: 3D + TIME = 4D: SPACE and CIRCULATION Phase 01: FIRST, STEPS. OBJECTIVES:
by the end of this unit the learner will:
- Develop the ability to design with space-defining elements.
- Develop an understanding of circulation as movement through space.
- Develop the ability to design with circulation elements.
- Continue to develop an understanding of form and space.
- Continue to develop an understanding of the five formal/spatial organizations: Centralized, Linear, Radial, Clustered, and Grid.
- Continue to develop the ability to use diagrams analytically, synthetically, and generatively.
- Continue to develop a design vocabulary grounded in Form, Space, and Order.
- Continue to develop iterative processes that apply the seven ordering principles: Axis, Symmetry, Hierarchy, Datum, Rhythm, Repetition, and Transformation
- Continue to develop their generative sketching skills.
- Continue to develop their ability to observe positive/negative space and their relationship.
REQUIRED READING: For this unit you will read and study Chapter 3 – Form + Space and Chapter 5 – Circulation in Frank Ching’s book, Architecture: Form, Space and Order to begin to understand the ELEMENTS defining SPACE, the CIRCULATION ELEMENTS, and the configuration of the PATH. You will use the knowledge gained from these chapters and the in-class lectures in order to develop your work.
ASSIGNMENT (CONNECTIONS) DESCRIPTION: You will design a pathway within a designed construct that will configure the route for two different sized balls to pass through. Your construct will have its own site (a stair tread) and predetermined entry and exit locations for the pathway. Your pathway will have to allow passage from another student’s construct before and after yours to be considered a successful project, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing and representative of your city.
