Unit 03 FORM + SPACE = A NEW ORDER Three Dimensional Design and Organization Systems – Phase 02
OBJECTIVES: by the end of this unit the learner will:
- Gain a fundamental understanding of form and space.
- Gain a fundamental understanding of the five formal/spatial organizations: Centralized, Linear, Radial, Clustered, and Grid.
- Develop the ability to use diagrams analytically, synthetically, and generatively.
- Continue to develop a design vocabulary grounded in Form, Space, and Order.
- Continue to develop iterative processes that apply the seven ordering principles.
- Continue to develop their generative sketching skills.
- Continue to develop their ability to observe positive/negative space and their relationship.
REQUIRED READING: For this unit you will read and study Chapter 2 – Form and Chapter 4 – Organization in Frank Ching’s book, Architecture: Form, Space and Order to begin to understand Centralized, Radial, Linear, Clustered, and Grid organization systems. You will use the knowledge gained from these chapters and the in-class lectures in order to develop your work.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION: We will continue to examine how words, sentences, and ideas from a text (Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities) may inform the design of a 3D city layout. You will continue to utilize the seven ordering principles, solid/void relationships, and now formal/spatial organizations to develop your generative three-dimensional design skills. Explore how organizational systems might be physically represented three-dimensionally using points, lines, and planes (ground planes, wall planes, overhead planes) to create interior and exterior volumes and spaces. Example: You may decide to project the positive forms within each tile upward with a distance comparable to the strength of the form (if it is dominant, it could be projected up higher than less dominant or subordinate forms). You can then project negative forms across in a similar fashion according to the weight of the forms. It is okay to subdivide or composite complex positive or negative forms and curate what information you project from the tiles. Using chipboard and then white card-stock for the final, you will use your Phase 01 plan and elevation tiles to create a three-dimensional artifact that demonstrates your understanding of designed form and space while continuing to use the same city that you used for Units 01 and 02.
