Arbew Chui

In my eyes, the objects whether a sweeping landscape, a tree, a rock, flower, or juicy melon, sitting on my table, all have a peaceful power. I watch them in my own way and let them wake up my mind. Through moving the brush I create with each stroke, the same way as the Chinese calligraphic method. I create the space in the paper. Light is color, color is light, through control of the water, I mix color in the paper, but not in the palette. I create many “studies” or practice works using rice paper, until I have mastered the way the colors absorb and change and I know what I want to do. Sometimes this process brings the accident effect, like the natural way used in the Japanese ceramics. But if I like it, then I know how to create this effect with purpose. I learn and create each piece fresh and new staying open to new effects. When the white part of the painting had become the balance and power, like the silent part of a symphony, the painting is only then complete. All the inspiration has come from my Chinese background. Like coffee and tea can not mix together, their tastes are completely different. I like them because they are different. Arbew Chui: born into an artist family. His father Wahchow Chui, and grandfather T. P. Chui, both are professional artists. As a child, he watched them paint everyday so he picked up the brush very easy. He get the art education from his family. His first exhibition was in 1990, China. He moved to United States in 1999, living and painting in Bay Area California.
