Sometime around 8:00 a.m., and over Sunday morning waffles, Michelle and I decided that the weather was not going to be as gloomy as predicted and we decided to head out to Virginia's second highest peak and look for crossbills. We were unsuccessful in our quest but we did get to spend a great day hiking and birding the highlands of Virginia. We saw lots of Red-breasted Nuthatches, Black-capped Chickadees, Pine Siskins, and Ravens on Whitetop. Around 3:00 p.m. we decided to head down to Holston Lake and see what we could find. At the Weir Dam we found Mallards, Wigeon, Bufflehead, and Redheads. At Musick's Campground we found Pied-billed and Horned Grebes and a small raft of Common Goldeneye. The best birds of the day were a triplet of Sandhill Cranes at the cove behind Musick's. Near dark, we started the long trip home to Grundy.
