With the forecast for a beautiful day, Michelle, Chazzy and I decided to spend the day birding the Daniel Boone NF in Jackson, Laurel and Rockcastle Counties. Our first stop was Forest Service Rd #486 near S Tree Campgound. We knew it was going to be a good day as we heard 6 species of warbler just where we parked. The grand total for the day was 11 warbler species that included Yellow-throated, Pine, Hooded, Worm-eating, Black-throated Green, Ovenbird, La Waterthrush, Cerulean, C. Yellowthroat, Parula, and Black & White. We also found three species of Vireo (RE, BH, and WE) and managed some distant pics of the White-eyed. Best bird of the day was a Sharp-shinned that came of of nowhere to nab a small bird on the wing over the creek as we were watching a waterthrush. It made several sharp turns in pursuit and finished with a barrel roll as it grabbed the songbird from the air. At the Civil War Battlefield Camp Wildcat, we found our first Broad-winged Hawk of 2011...heading north. Overall a perfect spring day to be out birding in Kentucky.
