Pine Mountain - March 11, 2006

Michelle and I enjoyed a great day of hiking along the Virginia-Kentucky Border near the Breaks Interstate Park. Pine Mountain forms the state line and climbs to over 3,000 feet in elevation - extending for more than 120 miles. The weather was perfect with temps near 75 most of the day.

The highlight of the trip was a juv. Northern Goshawk at Skegg's Gap. The bird gave us nice looks before heading NE into Virginia. Phoebe's were singing at every elevation. Frogs and salamanders were active and laying eggs.

Nice page with interesting and entertaining photos. You Talbotts are a photogenic bunch. I look forward to seeing you this weekend in my first visit to The Breaks. John

you salamander appears to be Dusky Salamander (Desmognathus fusca) -- I think that spelling is correct.
