Michelle, Chazzy, and I had a great day of birding at Laurel Bed Lake for the Blackford, VA Christmas Bird Count. Laurel Bed is a high altitude lake at 3,600 feet and normally is frozen over by the time the Russell County CBC rolls around. This year there was no ice and lots of waterfowl to be seen. Interesting finds included a single Long-tailed Duck, Ruddy Ducks, Red-breasted Mergansers, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Horned Grebes, 102 American Coots, and a Common Loon.
