Red Dog

Waste slate was taken from the mines and piled into hollows in areas called slate dumps or gob piles. The pressure at the bottom of the deepest piles would sometimes cause them to spontaneously catch fire. The fires would burn for many years. The final product was a burned slate that was red in color called "red dog".
