although I come fron the united kindom I have since a child been fasinated by American history an was invoved in the music business starting with early jazz & blues so it was the phipps family records that alerted me to the red jacket mine disaster. With so many mine diasters in the area and the lack of any authority to keep control not only was life very hard for most workers, beside people treated as would a disposable machine. What a shame that the entrance has been alowed to disapear . I have always thought the J.L Blevins & Coy Reed were the centurians standing guard over the other 43 lost soles. So yes some sort of marker as a reminder of the days when life was so cheap would be at least a small tribute to their fisfuture.

I grew up in Keen Mountain and attended Garden High School. Can you tell me where this mine is located?
