Guesses Fork - May 17, 2008

Michelle, Chazzy, and I spent the afternoon hiking the reclaimed strip mine sites along the ridge at Guesses Fork in Buchanan County. The birding turned out to be better than expected. Best bird of the day was a Black-billed Cuckoo. Cerulean Warblers were all along the ridgetops along with Redstart, Ovenbird, Hooded, Yellow-throated, Common Yellowthroat, Chats and other warblers. Blue-winged Warblers apparently have pushed the Golden-winged Warblers off their territories as no Golden-wingeds were found today. Three species of shorebirds were unusual for Buchanan County as a Spotted and a Solitary Sandpiper were found around small water holes and a pair of Killdeer were busy trying to distract us from three little Killdeer chicks running through the grass. Here are some pics from our hike.
