Michelle, Chazzy and I made a hike up Caney Island Branch this morning. It was already well past the 70 degree mark with about 100% humidity by the time we got started. We did find some interesting warblers along the way which included Kentucky, Cerulean, Hooded, Ovenbird, Redstart, Yellow, Yellow-throated, Black-throated Green, Parula, and Black-and-white. We finished the day with 6 Kentuckys - we got great looks at several of them. Michelle had seen 7 on her previous hike which prompted her to remark, "For 2008 warbler fashion, Kentucky is the new Hooded." Several were singing which is helping us differentiate them from Ovenbirds as we can listen to both along the hike. We also found a Red Eft, a 5-foot Black Snake and two yellow Box Turtles. Butterflies were everywhere and I managed a couple of pictures. I hope the recent temperatures are not a portent of the rest of the summer.
