I took a long weekend and got to enjoy the these perfect autumn days with family and friends back in Buchanan County, Virginia. On Saturday, Mom, Dad and I went over to the Breaks Interstate Park and spent the morning birding with our friends from the Buchanan County Bird Club. On Sunday, a long hike along reclaimed strip mines sites revealed several more migrant species. Warblers for the weekend included Bay-breasted, Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia, Tennessee, Chestnut-sided, and Palm. Other migrants included Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Veery, Wood Thrush, Gray-cheeked Thrush and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. We found our first Winter Wrens and White-crowned Sparrows of the season also. Overall, a great weekend to be hiking the Cumberland Plateau.
