I have been wanting to try a half-century ride (50 miles) for a few weeks now and decided that this morning was a go. In addition, I'm a bit of a history buff so why not plan snack stops at some of the most historic spots in the state of Kentucky - three of which I could incorporate into my ride. My first stop was the original site of the Boonesborough Settlement along the Kentucky River. I visited both the original site and the reconstructed fort. My next stop was Boone Station in historic Athens, KY which was established by Daniel Boone in 1779. Finally, my last stop was at mile 42 at the White Hall Mansion of the Clay family. The remnants of Hurricane Isaac were threatening to dampen my ride but the rain held off until I got back home. I had a pretty good headwind the last 10 miles or so but I think I got the better end of the bargain as Isaac gave me cool temps and overcast skies for the entire ride. I think history and cycling go well together.
