Dad and I had a great hike in the Beartown Wilderness this weekend. First we hiked up the Appalachian Trail from Walker's Gap to the Chestnut Knob Shelter at 4,400 feet. Then we went "off-trail" down to Heninger Gap and into the Beartown Wilderness area. The views into Burke's Garden were spectacular and birds and wildflowers were everywhere. Dad spotted the wreckage of a Cessna at about 4,000 feet and we investigated the crash site. After some research on the Internet it turns out that the plane went down in 1985 and both the pilot and passenger were killed. It was a perfect day to be out enjoying the high country of Virginia's 4th highest mountain.
