Leukemia.JPG

Aloha Billy,
As of today it was much better result than the day before and the day
before that!  At the beginning her White Blood Count (WBC) was at
288,000 where ones average should be at 30,000.  This means that
something was really wrong because an infection will result around
80,000.  With antibiotics that first night it went down to 276,000.
Chemo then entered the picture as the doctors found out that they were
dealing with Leukemia which brought down the WBC down to 146,000 the
following day.  Tuesday, the WBC was at 39,000 and Wednesday the WBC is
at 24,000 which is almost back to normal yet because now that we
determined it was cancerous we must get the amount down to zero.  From
there the body can start from scratch making a new batch which can take
about 2 months.  The bone marrow will also be tested to see if the
cancer is also in the marrow.  If so, then a bone marrow transplant is
necessary.  If not, then they are many options which are:
 1)  Hope that this disease will stay in remission and after passing the
5 year mark then one can assume that she will be cured.
 2)  Do a bone marrow transplant anyway just to be sure that she will
not have to go thought chemo again if it ever comes back.  But the cost
would be around $100,000 to HMSA and that may take away a good bone
marrow who maybe in a more life threatening situation.  Or better yet,
use a bone marrow from her brother or sister so no other patents will be
in a position to lose one from the international bone marrow bank.  Yet
the doctors believe that this bone marrow may have also contribute her
breast cancer from not reoccurring so why destroy it now.
 3)  Harvest the healthy bone marrow from her own body when she is in
remission and use it if it comes back again and if no other donors are
will to come forward or none can be found.
Currently they are other road blocks that are in her way.  Lynne has an
thicker lining of the walls in the gallbladder.  The cat scan reveal no
gall stones but she still has a fever at just below 100F.  Because the
WBC was high, the kidneys and spline are a little enlarged which one can
expect in her condition.  Now she also had picked up Pneumonia and her
lungs has filled up with fluid. Today using antibiotics, the fluid has
been draining out and some still remain on the lower left lung.  The
doctors believe that her mild temperature is caused by the chemo and the
Pneumonia and that the gallbladder walls are thicker just as the kidneys
and spline are equally affected.  Even if she did have a gallbladder
attack, the doctors believe that she may bleed to death during surgery
because of the low platelets amount.  Today she had a second day of
platelet transfusion to help that amount increase as the chemo is
killing some of them.  It is just a waiting game now.
Lynne was able to sit in her chair most of the day while I occupied her
bed.  At times the nurses thought I was the patient.  Because of my lost
of appetite and the terrible food in the hospital, I have lost 7 pounds
in 4 days. I would not recommend this type of diet program.
That's it for now!

Alton & Lynne
