Hydra

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argosaronic Gulf. There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port". High-speed hydrofoils and catamarans from Piraeus, some 37 nautical miles away, serve Hydra. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway! In Hydra, you won’t see any cars or bikes. Everyone uses their foot, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens. The inhabited area, however, is so compact that most people walk everywhere. Hydra benefits from numerous bays and natural harbors, and has a strong maritime culture. The island is a popular yachting destination. In 2007, a National Geographic Traveler panel of 522 experts rated Hydra the highest of any Greek island as a unique destination preserving its "integrity of place".
