Spain - Valencia - City of Arts and Sciences

Arches of the Umbracle with L'Assut de l’Or bridge. In a bid to rival Seville's Expo and Barcelona's redeveloped port, Valencia competes with what has been billed "the largest urban complex in Europe for cultural, educational, and leisure expansion." It's in the southern part of the city, on a 36-hectare (90-acre) site in a carefully landscaped park of lush greenery and peaceful lagoons. The goal of the complex is to make learning fun. The state-of-the-art educational centre consists of five main buildings: the Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and digital projections), the Umbracle (a landscaped vantage point and car park), the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum (an innovative centre of interactive science), the Oceanográfico (the largest aquarium in Europe with over 500 marine species) and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (which takes care of the operatic programme). In addition to these you also have the Ágora, which gives the complex a multifunctional space. Along an axis of just under two kilometres that was formerly the bed of the River Turia, this complex promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana has striking architecture - designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela
