Around the late 1980’s I discovered Mullanary Lake between
Rockcorry and Ballybay in my home county of Monaghan.
The most notable feature of the lake was what became known
(for want of a better description) as THE FENCE. I once met the farmer who
owned the land around. This ‘fence’ and another parallel to it about 5 feet to
it’s right was apparently used to guide cattle starting their swim to an island
in the middle of the lake. Anyway ‘The Fence’ was to become one of my most
successful prints and it was awarded the Slattery Trophy (top prize in our local
club’s annual competition). The following year it was picked on the Irish
Panel that took part in the 16th Colour Print Biennial in Cyprus where Ireland
finished just outside the top 10 in the world.
