Word was out among travellers that children in far eastern Turkey would be standing in the road demanding cigarettes.
If not given, they would throw stones to smash windowshields.
Some travellers would bring plastic replacements, in Tabriz/Iran real replacements of many brands were available.

We escaped that fate by a special tactic: If there were children on the road we would wave and smile to them
enthousiastically....they would be so stunned to see two women sitting there that they forgot to do anything
