A day out around RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, at the end of April, with my friend Graham. A beautiful spring day, although with an icy wind. I've been meaning to get to Mildenhall for a long time now: the prompt was the imminent closure of the base. We got to John's field (the Nook campsite) overlooking the Mildenhall runway late morning to discover a hive of complete inactivity. But after a fair wait, the aircraft I'd really wanted to see, the RC-135U Combat Sent took off for a mission to who-knows-where. One of the other photographers there told us there were due to be some Eagles flying at LN about 2pm, so Graham and I headed over there. We were rewarded with 6 F-15E launches, and another half dozen F-15C in the circuit doing touch and goes. Back to Mildenhall, where there was more activity later in the afternoon. A KC-135 with a trailing drogue and MPRS pods was doing circuits, an MC-130J loaded up with paratroops, and the Ospreys were up and about. All in all a most rewarding day - and thanks to Graham for great company!
