Once a year, in February when the sea ice is at a minimum, two ships resupply the station (and South Pole Station) for the coming year. One refuels us and the other brings all the food and supplies. In recent years, because of mega iceberg B-15 having lodged against Ross Island and leading to a huge build-up of sea ice, we have been about 4x farther from the open Ross Sea, about 80 miles. Two Coast Guard icebreakers used to do the work, but they've in for repair (hence the photo being so fuzzy) so we've had a Russian icebreaker do the work. This year it was a particularly difficult job, so one of the CG cutters came down, but by then the work was done.
The Palmer is a research vessel that comes into our ice pier (yeah, a floating chunk of sea ice heavily managed and used for several years at a time as a dock; the world's only) to swap out scientists and supplies.
There are also a few tourist vessels that come into the McMurdo Sound when it's open, and they get tours of McM Station. We also see the Russians in town occasionally, whereas the "Coasties" and esp. the Palmer folks blend in a bit more.
