Steam escapes through the ground at many locations on the caldera (large high flattish area in profile), creating caves where it melts the overlying snow/ice which is oh-so-slowly moving downhill. These caves humid and relatively warm. They can be quite complex and, where their roofs are thin, can pose a hazard to travel above on the snow. This one was previously unexplored. We used a ladder to get in and Bill and Nelia named this one the Kachina Cave for the ice stalagmites in the photo. The steam, on it's way out, also freezes creating hollow towers. We exited this cave via one of these towers. It will not surprise you that these photos do not do justice to the mind-blowing ice crystals, but at least you'll get an idea as to their incredible variety, structure, and size.
