This is a 2-day course that our dept (Field Safety) teaches to everyone whose job requires them to leave McMurdo. We cover the obvious topics: staying warm, cold injuries, and camping in the cold, including how to put up polar tents (Scott tents; yellow) which are very heavy but very sturdy in the wind. We also teach VHF and HF radio use, give a risk management talk, and run students through a couple scenarios. Upon return to town we show dvd's about helicopter safety and protocols and the same for the Dry Valleys. The course runs twice a week at 20 students (two of us) for most of the season, later dropping off to 10 students and one of us. We stay in a hut!
