Viva Mexico at El Rancho de las Golondrinas 2011

On July 16th and 17th El Rancho de las Golondrinas in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque held the 4th annual Viva Mexico celebration. This event is designed to showcase the vast culture of Mexico. The Voladores (Flying Men) from Papantla, Veracruz performed the Dance of the Flying Men on both days. This pre-Hispanic ritual is dedicated to the sun, the four cardinal directions and the four winds. The dancers climb to the top of a 60' pole. The Corporal stands atop a 15 x 15" platform where he plays a 5-tone reed flute and small double-headed drum. When he is done performing the four voladores who have ropes tied around their waists, throw themselves backwards and rotate around the pole until they reach the ground.
There were also artisans from 12 states in Mexico that participated in the event. The entertainment was highlighted by the Tierra del Humo Gualaguetza dance troupe from Oaxaca and the Rodeo Clowns of Conisa 20.
