Giant African Land Snails

[NOTE: Click on any of the images below to see them fully]

Back in the 'olden days' (round about 1997 iirc) I used to keep hundreds of Giant African Land snails - due to lack of time and space (and a very sick premature baby) they gradually reduced in numbers until they'd all gone. My old snail pages, although now extremely out of date, and incomplete, can still be found lurking in cyberspace at: http://www.oocities.org/heartland/valley/6210/ or http://reocities.com/heartland/valley/6210/ (thank you to whoever is responsible for preserving these). The 'How to find Brixton Snails' pages, were, however, hosted on another server and not backed up. They can now be found here (jpeg format) https://pbase.com/annierat1/market .

The current place to find information on pet snails is: http://www.petsnails.co.uk/

Recently I've missed having snails, so took a trip (or two!) to Brixton Market. On trip 1 (August 2012) I acquired three smallish a. marginata. On trip 2 (September 2012) I acquired four slightly bigger margies! Once they've settled, and I get a bit more time, I'll add some more photos. In the meantime, check out my archive snail galleries (The Frank Collins Pictures and Old Snail Pictures). I'll add to those too once more of the old website stuff surfaces!

Jan/Feb 2015: Unfortunately all the 2012 snails have all passed away. Happened over a couple of months - think they had all just come to the end of their natural lives - they got very dry and slow (I know!). There's one left who I picked up in November 2014 - it was out of snail season in Brixton, but little 'Flange' was on the counter with his head sticking out of a bag. How could I leave him there?!

29 May 2015: Well, how's that for luck! We went to Brixton to get some friends for Flange, and they were literally just waiting for a delivery - I was told to come back in 30 minutes (they remembered me from last time, I'm now very up-front that I want pets, and never had any issues buying) ... and there they were in a huge crate. Picked up 7 beautiful snails, all in amazing condition as they'd only just arrived. Amongst the Margies was a little surprise ... a small tiger snail - I didn't realise until I'd got back to our friends house and got them into the buckets - I chose him due to the pink on the inside of his shell. I just hope he survives, as they do tend to be a bit more 'delicate' than Margies. [also: Ada - if you've made it here it was lovely to talk to you - as you can see, snails are doing well :) ]

21 May 2018: I currently have four snails after this winter, and two days ago we rescued another three from Brixton. They were really far back in their shells, but have survived so far. Photos coming soon.

22 May 2021: All but one of my 2018 snails have passed on, so today I picked up some more at Brixton. Don't update here much, but catch me on Twitter @AnnieRat1 or search #BrixtonSnails
