Ann Rutledge (Grandma's) Minerals

I'm afraid this is all I have of my grandmother's minerals. Several were sent to me by my kind Aunt Sally, and some are what's left of the small starter collection she sent me for my kids. Someone else in the family may have some. Ann Rutledge lived at 1 Tucson Terrace and ran a mineral shop out of her home. She was one of the original group of dealers who started the first Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in the Helen Keeling School.

I am Sally Rutledge and I helped run the Rock Shop.There were so many people that visited us.I remember a lot of young people we even took some on our rock hunts.My own collection of miniatures and thumbnails were sold after I married and moved away,I bought them from dealers from all over the world that visited us. I really wish I had them now.My name now is Susan Franklin.

When I was a boy, I lived in Tucson and visited your qrandmothers "Rock Shop" many, many times. I have nothing but fond memories of her and how she would teach a child about the wonders of the natural world. Once in a while, when I am looking at a specimen that I uncover in a box in the basement, I think of her and her wonderous world of azurite crystals, slabs of sandstone that 'bend', and other 'thumbnails' that I still own. Thank you for your site. It brings back lovely memories!

Sharon, thanks for the info. I have been to Mindat several times. Many of the spelling are taken right off the previous owners description label, and I've noticed that several of them are old spellings for the mineral, some are just incorrect. I will have to try and find the errors and correct them. I've tried with a couple of my favorite purchases, to get the location of the specimans, but many times the person selling the collection is an estate dealer and didn't bother to find out or was unable to find out since the previous owner had passed away. The last lot I bought on ebay belonged to a lady in Arkansas, and I was able to get her name from the seller, but I haven't been able to find any information on her at all. So it goes, I guess. I can't really put my all into this hobby right now, but when I can, I'll be more particular about the spelling and all. Thanks for your comments. Alice at alicety@aol.com

Good for you for taking an interest in your grandmother's minerals. A helpful place to learn about minerals is to google Mindat. This will tell you just about anything you want to know about a mineral. It also helps with spelling of locations and descriptions. For instance, druse is the sparkly coating on some minerals, not drooze. Apatite, mimetite, heulandite are the more accepted spelling for some of your specimens. When buying from ebay make certain to get the location where the specimen was found or mined. This information makes it more valuable and useful. Sharon dbarrett@acsalaska.net
